Vichy covers 5.9 km², lies between 243 and 317 m above sea level and had 25,115 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Vichy (pronounced), sometimes formerly known as Vichy-les-Bains, is a town in the centre of France, situated in the south-east of the département of l'Allier, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is a sub-prefecture and one of the principal towns of the historic region of Bourbonnais. Its inhabitants are known as the Vichyssois and the Vichyssoises.
A little history
The site of Vichy, though extensively excavated, has yielded virtually no prehistoric artefacts, unlike its immediate surroundings such as the valley of the Sioule, where Jenzat and Bègues, for example, were occupied during the Bronze Age, and Varennes-sur-Allier and Néris-les-Bains clearly have a Gaulish past. It is therefore highly probable that the location of Vichy was covered by water until a relatively recent past. After the waters receded, the presence of a ford on the Flumen Elaver (Allier) and of springs with therapeutic properties stimulated human settlement at this spot.
