A little history
Permanent settlement is attested within the boundaries of present-day Paris from the Chasséen period (between 4,000 and 3,800 BCE) in the village of Bercy. The remains of three Neolithic dugout canoes, now on display at the musée Carnavalet, were found on the left bank of a former arm of the Seine in the 12th arrondissement, where human presence appears to have been continuous throughout the Neolithic period. An oppidum appears to have existed on the île de la Cité before the Gallo-Roman era, confirmed by the discovery of archaeological traces dated between 200 BC and 10 BC.
