The 16th arrondissement of Paris is one of the twenty arrondissements of Paris, situated on the right bank of the Seine, to the west of the city. It is bordered to the east by the Seine and to the west by the Parisian périphérique, with the exception of the bois de Boulogne which lies on the other side of this road. The arrondissement is essentially residential, but is nonetheless visited by tourists for its numerous museums and remarkable sites such as the Trocadéro and the Bois de Boulogne.
A little history
Until the middle of the 19th century, the territory of the present 16th arrondissement consisted of several villages outside the capital. In the 7th century, on the right bank of the Seine, from the current district of Chaillot to Boulogne, there existed a forest by the name of Rouvray and a village by the name of Nimio. The Bishop of Le Mans, saint Bertram, owned the estate and a villa. Upon his death in 623, in accordance with his will, his entire estate (including the village of Nimio, since renamed Nijon) was bequeathed, along with the associated vineyards, to the diocese of Paris.
