Its urban area, which it forms with its neighbour Aix-en-Provence, and its catchment area rank third behind those of Lyon. It extends northwards as far as Aix-en-Provence, and the two towns thus form a conurbation (urban area), the third largest in France by population with 1,648,953 inhabitants, behind those of Paris and Lyon.
A little history
The earliest traces of human presence in the Marseille basin date back to around 60,000 BC (Middle Palaeolithic). In the Upper Palaeolithic, the grotte Cosquer, which was not yet submerged at the time, was occupied between 27,000 and 19,000 years before the present.
