Menton (Mentàn / Mentan [mẽn.ˈtãŋ] in Mentonasque) is a French commune in the département des Alpes-Maritimes situated on the Franco-Italian border, close to the principality of Monaco (7 km). It is a seaside tourist resort on the Côte d'Azur, known in particular for its fête du citron.
A little history
Excavations at the Balzi Rossi (grottes de Grimaldi), on the Italian border, attest to a human presence as far back as the Upper Palaeolithic (around 22,000 years before our era). The via Julia Augusta, an ancient Roman road linking Vintimille to Nice-Cimiez and Rome, must have passed through Menton. No archaeological traces have ever been identified within the town, even though it was thought that the road may have followed the rue Longue. It is on the colline de Pépin, to the west of the present-day town, that the original settlement most likely gathered, around its château founded at the instigation of the comte de Vintimille.
