Vallauris [valoʁis] is a French commune located in the département of Alpes-Maritimes, in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Vallauris is part of the technopole of Sophia Antipolis and forms an integral part of the communauté d'agglomération de Sophia Antipolis. The town of Vallauris is known in the history of art for having welcomed the painter Pablo Picasso, who revived the craft of ceramics in the commune.
A little history
The territory of Vallauris has been inhabited since ancient times. The oldest recognised traces of occupation date back to the end of the Iron Age, but the most numerous belong to the Roman period. In the 1970s, the clearing of a sinkhole located in the Saint-Bernard quarter led to the discovery of bronze bracelets and deliberately twisted iron weapons associated with human bones. The conditions of the discovery do not make it possible to determine whether this was a deposit or a form of burial, however the objects are of indigenous style from the end of the Iron Age and underwent Celtic-type treatment.
