A little history
A working-class district situated outside the city, the present 11th arrondissement took shape around two faubourgs of eastern Paris, the faubourg du Temple to the north, and the faubourg Saint-Antoine to the south. The first grew up around the enclos du Temple, and the second around the abbaye Saint-Antoine-des-Champs. To the north, the quartier de Charonne was home to several religious congregations. Only the couvent de la Madeleine de Traisnel and the couvent des Bénédictines du Bon-Secours survived urbanisation.
