Commentry is a French commune situated in the département of Allier, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its inhabitants, numbering 6,017 in 2023, are known as the Commentryens. This mining town experienced strong growth in the 19th century thanks to its open-cast coal mine.
A little history
In 1882, Commentry elected, for the first time in the world, a socialist mayor, Christophe Thivrier. During the repression of January and February 1894, the police carried out searches there targeting anarchists residing in the town, without any real success. In September 1902, the congress that gave birth to the Parti socialiste de France was held in Commentry, through the merger of the Parti ouvrier français (POF), the "Marxist" party of Jules Guesde, the Parti socialiste révolutionnaire (PSR), the "Blanquist" party of Édouard Vaillant, and the Alliance communiste révolutionnaire.
