Cusset is a French commune, intimately linked to its neighbour Vichy and situated on the foothills of the Montagne bourbonnaise, in the département of l'Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is the second largest commune in the urban unit and the aire d'attraction de Vichy and in the communauté d'agglomération Vichy Communauté, as well as the fourth largest commune in the département after the three arrondissement capitals by number of inhabitants. At the 2023 census, it had 13,316 inhabitants, known as the Cussetois and the Cussetoises or the Cussétois and the Cussétoises.
A little history
As early as the 4th century BC, a Celtic settlement preceded and overlooked the present-day town. The oppidum de Viermeux, an Arvernian oppidum intended to watch over the northern entrance to the Limagne, occupies a site made up of two plateaux covering 60 hectares, one of which, at 25 ha, sheltered several hundred families who abandoned it during the first centuries of our era. From the Gallo-Roman period, remains of aqueducts and hypocausts have been discovered, attesting to the presence of a villa.
