A little history
For the Gauls, Néris was called Neriomagos, after the god Nerios or Nerius, a deity personifying the thermal spring, in the Gaulish language. It was then a small town with a flourishing trade, at the crossroads of two routes. A Gaulish inscription, now held at the musée de Cluny, was discovered by chance around 1836 at the lieu-dit « Camp romain », to the north-west of the town. Not only gods but also Gaulish goddesses are linked to rivers, such as Sequana to the sources of the Seine, Icaunis to the source of the Yonne, and Sirona to the source of the Suran.
