Castres, the town

Castres covers 98.2 km², lies between 151 and 367 m above sea level and had 42,505 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Castres is a French commune, the sole sub-prefecture of the Tarn department, in the Occitanie region. In 2023, Castres is a town of 42,505 inhabitants, and with its urban area 57,830 inhabitants. It is the central town of the communauté d'agglomération de Castres-Mazamet, which has approximately 80,000 inhabitants and 14 member communes.

A little history

The site of Castres is thought to have been occupied since the Gallo-Roman period, when two clusters of dwellings can be distinguished, one at Gourjade and the other in the valley of the Durenque below the château d'Arifat. The first Christian missionaries are said to have arrived around the 3rd century. A legend places the origin of the town around the founding of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Benoît (or abbaye de Bellecelle). It recounts that this abbey is said to have been founded around the year 647 on the right bank of the Agout by lords from the court of Sigisbert III, Robert, Ancelin and Daniel, who came to settle there and live as hermits.
