Graulhet [ɡʁojɛ] (in Occitan Graulhet [grau̯ˈʎet]) is a French commune situated in the département of Tarn in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Castrais, an essentially agricultural territory, between the right bank of the Agout to the south and its tributary, the Dadou, to the north. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Dadou, the Agros, the Ruisseau d'Assou, the ruisseau d'Agouyre, the ruisseau de Lenjou, the ruisseau de Pascabasié, the ruisseau du Verdaussou and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Human occupation of the site is attested by numerous archaeological finds that have been discovered, dated to approximately 500 to 100 BC. The Roman presence is evidenced among other things by the existence of a Gallo-Roman oppidum. The rocky spur overlooking the river was given a feudal castle (which has since been destroyed), and the castrum de Graulhet, with a small township, is mentioned for the first time in 961, in a will made by Raymond Ier, comte de Rouergue.
