Mazamet (pronounced [mazamet]) is a French commune, situated in the département du Tarn, in the Occitanie region. Historically and culturally, the town of Mazamet sits at the foot of the Montagne Noire (a mountain massif forming the southern edge of the Massif central). Mazamet is an urban commune with 10,085 inhabitants in 2023.
A little history
In the mid-19th century, the small town of Mazamet created an original activity, délainage, which allowed it to establish commercial links with Argentina, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Uruguay. Shipments arrived principally through the port of Marseille, as well as the ports of Sète and Bordeaux. Production grew considerably, multiplying fourfold between 1890 and 1930. Thus, in 1929, the town's factories imported more than 50,000 tonnes of hides and 3,000 tonnes of raw wool, and exported 26,500 tonnes of leather and 2,000 tonnes of processed wool, for a turnover of nearly one billion francs.
