Tergnier covers 18 km², lies between 44 and 90 m above sea level and had 13,045 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Tergnier is a French commune located in the département of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Since 1 January 1974 it has incorporated the associated communes of Fargniers and Vouël, and since 1 January 1992 the associated commune of Quessy. The town, whose development took place during the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to the railway and its important depot, was destroyed during the First and Second World Wars.
A little history
Painstaking research into the modest origins of the commune goes no further back than the archives of the 17th century. Roman remains were discovered at Vouël, where the church may have been built on the site of a pagan temple, alongside the chaussée Brunehaut. A motte-and-bailey castle mound was identified at Vouël, known as the Tombelle de Vouël. In 1214, the abbot of Saint-Nicolas-aux-Bois settled a dispute brought against the Premonstratensians by Geoffroi and Simon de Condren.
