Chauny is a French town situated in the département of Aisne, in Hauts-de-France. Its inhabitants are known as the Chaunois and the Chaunoises.
A little history
Before the 5th century, Chauny had only a citadel of Gaulish origin which, during the invasions of the Vandals (407) and the Huns (451), served as a refuge for the people. Although the exact date of the citadel's creation is unknown, historians agree that it was erected by the first counts of Vermandois, who wished to mark out and defend the borders of their domain by constructing along the frontier a series of fortifications known as châteaux borniers, in the same manner as the castles of Ham, Nesle, Ronssoy, Estrées-en-Arrouaise, Guise, Ribemont and Vendeuil.
