Saint-Quentin covers 22.6 km², lies between 68 and 125 m above sea level and had 52,813 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Quentinoise.
Saint-Quentin is a French commune situated in the département of Aisne, in the région of Hauts-de-France. With the largest population in the département, of which it is a sub-prefecture, Saint-Quentin is the ninth most populous commune in the région of Hauts-de-France. This Picard town is situated on the Somme.
A little history
The town was founded by the Romans, around the beginning of our era, to replace Vermand administratively as the capital of the Viromandui, a Belgian Celtic people who occupied the region. It received the name Augusta Viromanduorum, the Augusta of the Viromandui, in honour of the emperor Augustus. The site corresponds to a ford that allowed the Somme to be crossed. It was ravaged in the 3rd century and it is possible that Vermand became the local capital once again (cf. its name, which derives from Veromandis).
