La Fère is a French commune situated in the département of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region. A former seat of the École royale d'artillerie de La Fère, it is known for housing the statue of the Artilleur which previously adorned the pont de l'Alma in Paris.
A little history
Eudes Ier, comte de Paris and marquis de Neustrie, then king of the Franks from 888 to 898, died at La Fère, the seat of his winter camp, on 3 January 898. Around the 11th century, La Fère en Picardie became the fief of the seigneurs de Coucy, powerful rivals of the young Capetian monarchy. They built fortifications that would long defy the kings of France. In 1187, the tournament of La Fère, given by the sire de Coucy Raoul Ier in the meadows between La Fère and Vendeuil, lasted one week.
