It is principally known for the ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts, which made French the language used by the justice system. It also owes its popularity to the Cité Internationale de la langue française, opened in 2023 and located at the château de Villers-Cotterêts.
A little history
A simple clearing in the vast forêt des Sylvanectes served as a gathering place for the most distant ancestors of the Cotteréziens, who lived most often sheltered by the great woods. Local historians have been able to demonstrate that this corresponds to the current town centre. One must wait until the 6th century for mention to be made of a farm, "une villa" surrounded by a few thatched cottages, attributed by Clovis to one of his lieutenants. In 632, Dagobert hunted in the forest. He had a pied-à-terre there, then a royal residence (the palatium), and the history of the town quickly became intertwined with that of its château, which was initially a simple hunting lodge.
