Amiens, the town

Amiens covers 49.5 km², lies between 14 and 106 m above sea level and had 136,449 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Amiens (in Picard, Anmien) is a French commune, prefecture of the Somme department in the Hauts-de-France region. The historic capital of Picardie, it is, with its 136,449 inhabitants (at the last census in 2023) known as Amiénois, the main town of the department, the second largest in the region after Lille and the twenty-eighth in France. Located within the Paris - Londres - Bruxelles triangle, it is the centre of the pôle métropolitain du Grand Amiénois, grouping together nearly 400,000 inhabitants.

A little history

The discovery of significant prehistoric deposits in Amiens contributed to the birth of Prehistory, a discipline that established itself in the second half of the 19th century. The territory holds enormous potential for Quaternary geology and for the study of the earliest settlements in Europe. The significance of the Amiénois deposits and the quality of the work carried out by local prehistorians, such as Victor Commont and Jacques Boucher de Perthes (regarded as the founder of Prehistory), brought international scientific renown to the territory.
