Albert covers 13.8 km², lies between 42 and 121 m above sea level and had 9,521 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Albert is a French commune situated in the Somme department in the Hauts-de-France region. It is the third largest town in the department by population, after Amiens and Abbeville. Albert is the seat of the communauté de communes du Pays du Coquelicot and the principal industrial town of the Ancre valley.
A little history
A tumulus known as Minon Castel, situated near Albert on the road from Amiens, tends to prove the existence of human occupation of the site of Albert during the Neolithic period. The Roman road linking Samarobriva (Amiens) to Bagacum Nerviorum (Bavay) passed through the site on which the town of Albert was built. Substructures near the Roman road were found 2 km from the town centre of Albert. There is no trace, in ancient texts, of the existence of a place named Encre before the early Middle Ages.
