Doullens, the town
Doullens covers 33.4 km², lies between 52 and 152 m above sea level and had 5,751 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Doullens (pronounced [d̪ulɑ̃]) is a French commune situated in the département de la Somme in the Hauts-de-France region. It was in the great hall of the hôtel de ville that, on 26 March 1918, the act entrusting général Foch with the "unified command of the allied forces on the western front" during the First World War was signed. Doullens housed, until 2006, the base aérienne 922 Doullens, which supported the radar station at Lucheux.
A little history
In the Middle Ages, a Benedictine priory affiliated with the order of Cluny was founded at Doullens, placed under the patronage of Saint-Michel and dependent on the prieuré Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul d'Abbeville. The abbaye Saint-Michel de Doullens for Benedictine nuns was founded, in all likelihood in 1104, by the comte de Ponthieu. In 1202, Doullens obtained its first communal charter. The town was united with the Couronne de France in 1225.
