Cayeux-sur-Mer [kajø syʁ mɛʁ] is a French commune situated in the département de la Somme, in the région Hauts-de-France. Since July 2020, the commune has been part of the parc naturel régional Baie de Somme - Picardie maritime. The commune is also among the towns and villages awarded the Pays d'art et d'histoire label, which work to promote their heritage.
A little history
The earliest written mentions of Cayeux date from 1005. At that time, Richard Ier, duc de Normandie, wishing to take control of Saint-Valery, landed on the coastal territory and made his way towards Pendé in order to attack from the high ground. Adelis de Bavelinghem, heiress of Bavelinghem, married Arnould de Caieu, a knight renowned for his valour, who in 1196, together with Adelis, confirmed a donation made by Hugues de Bavelinghem, father of Adelis, to the abbaye Saint-Médard d'Andres. Arnould, towards the end of his life, took religious vows there and gave a portion of the marais de Balinghem and a sum of twenty marks to the abbey, which was confirmed by the bishop of Thérouanne, Lambert de Bruges.
