Ault [olt] is a French commune situated in the département de la Somme in the Hauts-de-France region. The commune regularly holds the Pavillon Bleu award. It is part of the parc naturel régional Baie de Somme - Picardie maritime.
A little history
In 1206, the town of Ault was important enough to receive a communal charter from Thomas, seigneur de Saint-Valery, who owned the château d'Ault on which the town depended at the time. It allowed the town to establish a communal council, the appointment of a maïeur (mayor), eschevins (municipal councillors), a sworn sergeant (the beginnings of the municipal police), and to use the church tower (topped with a watchtower turret) as the communal belfry. Thomas de Saint Valéry and his wife Adèle de Ponthieu had a chapel built at the château d'Ault a few years after the granting of the charter.
