Le Crotoy, the town

Le Crotoy is a French port commune in the baie de Somme, situated in the département of the Somme, in the Hauts-de-France. A seaside town with a beach facing south-west, on the northern bank of the estuary of the Somme, it forms part of the parc naturel régional Baie de Somme - Picardie maritime and of the towns and villages awarded the label « Pays d'art et d'histoire ».
A little history
In 1066, owing to unfavourable winds and poor sea conditions, the fleet of Guillaume de Normandie assembled for the conquest of England, which had set out from Dives-sur-Mer, took refuge at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, with several vessels anchoring at Le Crotoy. In 1150, the comte de Ponthieu had a castle built at Le Crotoy. Hugues III de Campdavaine, comte de Saint-Pol, had the comte de Ponthieu assassinated in the 12th century. This misdeed and many others form the basis of the legend of the « Bête Canteraine ».
