Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is a French commune situated in the département of the Somme and in the région of Hauts-de-France. It has been part of the parc naturel régional Baie de Somme - Picardie maritime since 2020. A little history
The promontory on which the town of Saint-Valery is built probably sheltered a Gaulish or even prehistoric oppidum. It is possible that the Romans founded a settlement in the cove sheltered by the cap Hornu. Roman coins and a few Greek coins have been found at Saint-Valery. According to the hagiography of the diocese of Amiens, King Clotaire II is said to have granted the ancient Gallo-Roman estate of Leucone to the eponymous saint, Valery (born in Auvergne around 565, died on 12 December 622 at the cap Hornu). Leucone remained a place of pilgrimage until the 11th century.
