The former capital of the Ponthieu, it was part of the province and then the administrative region of Picardie until 2015.
A little history
The subsoil contains numerous remains from the Pleistocene. The discovery of a lithic industry dating from the Acheulean is credited to Jacques Boucher de Perthes. This discovery is regarded as a founding element of prehistory as a science. Although the research of Jacques Boucher de Perthes brought to light an occupation of the site of Abbeville (the Menchecourt-lès-Abbeville district) from the Acheulean period, one must picture the location in Roman times as a succession of marshes, similar to the marais de Saint-Gilles that survive today.
