Marciac (Marciac in Gascon) is a French commune situated in the department of Gers, in the region of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in the pays d'Astarac, a very hilly territory in the southern Gers, with clay soil, running alongside the plateau de Lannemezan. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Arros, the Bouès, the Laüs, the ruisseau de Larté and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Marciac is a royal bastide, founded at the very end of the 13th century (1298) following a paréage between Étienne de Lupé, abbot of la Case-Dieu, Arnaud-Guilhem III, count of Pardiac and the seneschal of Toulouse, Guichard de Marzé, who built the bastide, gave it its customs and left it his name. The customs were confirmed in 1300 by the king of France Philippe IV le Bel. The original town was surrounded by a wall pierced by eight gates, featuring turrets all around it, with a wide moat dug around the outside. Wide-ranging privileges brought rapid success to this bastide.
