Lectoure covers 84.9 km², lies between 68 and 223 m above sea level and had 3,670 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Lectoure (in classical Gascon spelling, Leitora) is a French commune situated in the north of the Gers department in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Lomagne, a former division of the province of Gascogne with the title of viscountcy, nicknamed the "Toscane française". Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Gers, the Auroue, the Auchie, the Lauze, the ruisseau de Lesquère and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The site has been continuously occupied since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the numerous remains uncovered during excavations. The geographical situation of the site as a "éperon barré" has always favoured human settlement. An Aquitanian oppidum, later peacefully occupied by the Romans, the city of Lactora then spread across the plain and enjoyed a long period of prosperity. Successive barbarian invasions forced the inhabitants to return to the heights, to raise ramparts and to make Lectoure a stronghold for several centuries.
