Fleurance (Florença in Gascon Occitan) is a French commune situated in the département of Gers, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in the pays de Gaure, a territory at the heart of Gascony characterised by its cereal and oilseed fields, interspersed with sparse woodland and meadows. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Gers, the Osse, the ruisseau de Cussé, the ruisseau de Rouzas and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Fleurance is one of those new towns called bastides which were founded in the 13th and 14th centuries in the South-West of France in a context of demographic growth, seigneurial conflicts and the assertion of royal power. Like other towns and in the hope of a promising future, its name was inspired by that of one of the greatest capitals of medieval Europe, Florence. In 1272, the local lord Géraud de Cazaubon, comte de Gaure, failed to prevent the pillaging of his capital Sempuy by the comtes d'Armagnac and de Foix.
