Lombez [lɔ̃bɛs], (Lombèrs [lumbɛs] in Gascon) is a French commune in the canton of Val de Save, situated in the département of Gers in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Savès, a small Gascon province corresponding to the middle course of the Save. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Save, the Espienne and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Lomberium, Lombarium, Lombès and then Lombez was situated in the county of Comminges. Potter's activity existed during the Gallo-Roman period, as evidenced by objects, notably ceramics, found in the soil. The abbey Notre-Dame de Lombès, founded in 793, was erected as an episcopal see, suffragan of Toulouse, by a papal bull of Pope Jean XXII issued at Avignon on 11 July 1317. Lombez was the seat of an abbey created in the 9th century, which broke away from the Benedictine rule in the 12th century.
