Gimont, the town

Gimont (Gimont in Gascon) is a French commune situated in the département of Gers, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Gimoès, a small territory around Gimont, crossed through its middle by the Gimone. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Gimone, the Marcaoue, the ruisseau de Lahas, the ruisseau d'en Bon and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
On 5 April 1142, the nobleman Géraud de Brouilh, his wife and his children, donated to Albert, abbot of Berdoues, land in the forest known as Planasilva in order to found a Cistercian abbey there, the abbaye de Planselve. Of this Cistercian abbey only a few scant remains survive on the riverbank, on the left bank (via the D 12 in the direction of Saramon, 3 km from Gimont). An act of paréage was drawn up on 25 January 1265 between the abbot of Planselve and the seneschal of Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint Louis. The chosen location was in the parish of Saint-Justin, in the diocese of Toulouse, near the abbey.
