Nogaro (Nogaròu in Gascon) is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Gers, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Bas-Armagnac, or Armagnac noir, a territory stretching between the valleys of the Auzoue, the Gélise, the Douze and the Midou. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Midouze, the ruisseau de Saint-Aubin and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Nogaro is a sauveté of the archbishopric of Auch. Austinde, Archbishop of Auch (from 1050 to 1068), created Nogaro in 1055 by purchasing its territory from a vassal of the Comte d'Armagnac. The church was consecrated the following year, during a council held there. From 1050, in the earliest days of the sauveté of Nogaro, merchants (negociatores) paid a toll there. Notably, pilgrims were exempt from this toll at Manciet, which was a rare occurrence.
