Condom (in Gascon, Condom), also known as Condom-en-Armagnac, is a French commune and sub-prefecture of the Gers department, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Condomois, a former division of the province of Gascogne holding the title of county. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Baïse, the Osse, the Auvignon, the Gèle, the Drot, the Garaillon and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The site was occupied during the protohistoric period. The musée d'Agen holds, under inventory number 134 A2, a flat copper axe dating back to the Middle Bronze Age, found at Condom. Legend has it that a nobleman returning from Palestine was sent by a pope, with relics of the cross, to a wooded region, to found a town on a hill. Excavations have however demonstrated that populations inhabited the town well before the Roman invasion.
