Auch (in Gascon Occitan, Aush) is a French commune, prefecture of the Gers department, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Pays d'Auch, a cereal-growing and wine-producing territory which also established itself as a "Pays" in the sense of territorial planning in 2003. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Gers, the Auloue, the Sousson, the Arçon, the Talouch, the streams of Larros and Monsourbé and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The rocky promontory situated on the banks of the Gers where the historic centre stands today, notably the cathedral, does not correspond to an ancient oppidum, as one might expect. The pre-Roman town was established on the banks of the Gers, but on the opposite bank, which is flat. This locality, named Elimberri, belonged to the people of the Ausques, whose chief town, whose ancient name is unknown, appears to have been situated at Roquelaure (oppidum de la Sioutat).
