Pavie (Pavia in Gascon) is a French commune situated in the centre of the Gers département in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is part of the Pays d'Auch, a cereal-growing and wine-producing territory that also established itself as a pays in the sense of territorial planning in 2003. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Gers, the Sousson, the Cédon and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The occupation of the site of Pavie dates back to prehistory, as proved by materials regularly found in the surroundings of the village. Pavie was founded on 5 May 1281, at a time when the construction of bastides was very common in the South-West of France. It is the twin sister of Mirande, which was born on the same day by the will of the same co-signatories, the Sénéchal of Toulouse Eustache de Beaumarchais and the Cistercian abbot of Berdoues on whose lands it was erected. Pavie displays the characteristic layout of the sénéchal's foundations. It was organised along two perpendicular axes whose main and secondary streets define regular square blocks.
