Eauze or Éauze (pronounced [e'ɔzə, eoz]) is a French commune situated in the north-west of the Gers department, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is in the Bas-Armagnac, or Armagnac noir, a territory lying between the valleys of the Auzoue, the Gélise, the Douze and the Midou. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Gélise, the Izaute, the Bergon, the Tuzon, the ruisseau du Tréou and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Eauze is the former Elusa, the city of the Aquitanian or proto-Basque people of the Elusates. Some 3 km north of the present-day town, an oppidum was already occupied as early as the 3rd century BC. Allied with the Sotiates, the inhabitants of Sos (Lot-et-Garonne), they resisted the Romans, but after the siege of Sos, the Elusates were defeated in 56 BC.
