Mirande is a French commune, a sub-prefecture, situated in the south of the département of Gers in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in the pays d'Astarac, a very hilly territory in the south of Gers, with clay soil, running alongside the plateau de Lannemezan. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Baïse, the Lizet, the ruisseau du Rieutort and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Mirande is a bastide from the 13th century, built on the left bank of the Baïse. In the surrounding area, numerous prehistoric remains and tumuli bear witness to ancient occupation of the district. Archaeologists have put forward the hypothesis of a Gallo-Roman settlement on the territory where Mirande stands. This is supported by the pile and the funerary enclosures of the quartier d'Artigues, as well as by several chance finds, the most recent of which is a marble head of natural size uncovered during works carried out in a street in Mirande.
