Gruissan [ɡʁɥisɑ̃] (in Occitan Grussan) is a French commune situated to the east of the département of Aude in the Occitanie region in the south of France, around fifteen kilometres to the south-east of the town of Narbonne. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Narbonnais, a pays encompassing Narbonne and its surroundings, the massif de la Clape and the lagoon strip of the étangs. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Canal de la Robine, the ruisseau de la Combe de Lavit, the ruisseau du Rec and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Significant evidence of prehistoric settlement was discovered in 1866 in the grotte de la Crouzade. Listed as a monument historique, the site has been the subject of numerous excavation campaigns. During Antiquity the history of Gruissan is poorly documented. In the place of the present-day village there existed only a rock devoid of dwellings and sources of drinking water.
