Lézignan-Corbières (Lesinhan de las Corbièras in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the south of France in the north-east of the département of Aude in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the massif des Corbières, a limestone chaos forming the transition between the Massif central and the Pyrénées. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Aude, the Orbieu, the ruisseau de la Jourre Vieille Haute, the ruisseau de Lirou, the ruisseau Paillous and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The earliest traces of habitation in the surroundings of Lézignan are located in what is now the plain of Gaujac. Indeed, a Gallo-Roman villa stood on the site of Hosuerbas and served as a road staging post on the voie d'Aquitaine at the crossing of the Jourre. The location of this staging post is attested by various sources including the table de Peutinger. There is a controversy over the name of this villa, which may have been the villa Licinianus.
