Fleury (in Occitan Perinhan), also known locally as Fleury-d'Aude, is a French commune with 4,246 inhabitants spread across its three areas (Fleury-d'Aude, Saint-Pierre-la-Mer and Les Cabanes de Fleury) according to the most recent census of 2023. It is situated in the north-east of the département of l'Aude, in the Occitanie region in the south of France. In historical and cultural terms, the commune forms part of the Narbonnais, an area comprising Narbonne and its surroundings, the massif de la Clape and the lagoon strip of the étangs.
A little history
The site was inhabited in the Neolithic period and was certainly occupied during the Roman era. Until the end of the Middle Ages, the village was a fortified settlement, a castrum, built on a hill and topped by the château of the local lords. Numerous traces of ramparts are still visible around the current boulevard that encircles the village, as well as numerous porches and gateways giving access to the interior of the enclosure. Les Cabanes de Fleury originally formed a fishing village made up of rough reed huts.
