Castelnaudary is a French commune situated in the north-west of the département of Aude, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the former province of Lauragais, the former « Pays de Cocagne », linked both to the cultivation of pastel and to the abundance of its produce, and known as the « grenier à blé du Languedoc ». Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the Fresquel, the ruisseau de Glandes, the ruisseau de l'Argentouire, the ruisseau de Tréboul, the ruisseau de Fendeille, the ruisseau de Laval Basse and by two other watercourses.
A little history
A simple mutatio on the Roman road linking Narbo (Narbonne) to Tolosa (Toulouse), Castelnaudary was then known as Sostomagus and was inhabited by the Volques Tectosages. In 333, the anonymous pilgrim from Bordeaux, travelling towards Jerusalem, passed through and noted on his itinerary, mutatio Sostomago. At the very outset there was a castle, the château neuf d'Arius or Castellum Novum Arri, whose first official mention dates back to 1103. During the Crusade against the Albigensians, Simon IV de Montfort, leader of the crusaders, was besieged there (siège de Castelnaudary) by the counts of Toulouse and Foix in 1211. The outcome was the abandonment of the siege by the counts of Toulouse and Foix.
