Ganges [gɑ̃.ʒə] (in Occitan Gange ['gan.d͡ʒe]) is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Hérault, in the région of Occitanie. It stands at the confluence of the Hérault, the Rieutord and the Vis. Its inhabitants are known as the Gangeois.
A little history
The town of Ganges is very ancient, as it is mentioned in the Gallo-Roman period under the name of Aganticum. A lime kiln in the outskirts of Ganges is cited in a partnership contract for its operation in 1575. During the French Revolution, the citizens of the commune gathered within the revolutionary society, named the société populaire républicaine in year II. The Industrial Revolution was accompanied by the rise of the silk thread industry and then of hosiery, which would lastingly shape the town throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
