Castelnau-le-Lez, the town
Castelnau-le-Lez covers 11.2 km², lies between 19 and 93 m above sea level and had 26,058 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Castelnauvien.
Castelnau-le-Lez [kastɛlno lə lɛz] (in Occitan Castèlnòu de Les [kas.'tɛl'nɔw de les]) is a French commune situated in the département de l'Hérault in the région Occitanie, forming part of the unité urbaine de Montpellier and, consequently, of the aire d'attraction de Montpellier. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, the commune is watered principally by the river Lez and has a remarkable natural heritage with the Natura 2000 site of the Lez, as well as a zone naturelle d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique (ZNIEFF).
A little history
Around 700 BC, a first population settled on the plateau overlooking the Lez. The Romans named Sextantio a locality corresponding to a staging post on the voie Domitienne, built from 118 BC to link Italy to Hispania, shortly after the conquest of Gaule narbonnaise (125/120 BC). The nearest Gallo-Roman town was then Nîmes (Nemausus), chief town of the cité des Volques Arécomiques.
