La Grande-Motte (in Occitan, La Granda-Mota or Lo Motàs) is a French commune situated in the département of Hérault in the région of Occitanie. Close to Montpellier, La Grande-Motte is both a seaside resort and a marina created ex nihilo in 1965 by the "mission Racine", which today welcomes approximately 120,000 tourists per year, making it one of the ten most overcrowded towns relative to their population. Beyond this mass tourism concentrated along the coast, La Grande-Motte, which borders Aigues-Mortes and Le Grau-du-Roi, is also one of the gateways to the Camargue, more precisely to the Petite Camargue.
A little history
The current territory of La Grande-Motte was formerly part of the commune of Mauguio. At the time, this territory was a virtually uninhabited natural area, as only one farm stood on the land, which was otherwise occupied by marshland unsuitable for development and isolated from the surrounding villages by the étang de l'Or. La Grande-Motte takes its name from a wine-growing estate, the ferme de la Grande-Motte, which was itself named after a dune ("motte") of five metres, taller than the others, near which it was built.
