Mauguio (prononcé) is a French commune located in the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal d'irrigation du Bas-Rhône Languedoc, the canal du Rhône à Sète, the Salaison, the canal de Lansargues, the Cadoule, the Bérange, the ruisseau d'Aigues-Vives, the ruisseau de la Balaurie, the ruisseau de la Jasse and various other small watercourses.
A little history
During the 2010s, archaeological digs, notably on the site of Lallemand, 2 km north of Mauguio, shed further light on the lives of peasants from the early Middle Ages at this site (approximately from the 6th to the 9th century AD). A large silage area was notably uncovered, comprising approximately 550 silos used for the storage of cereals, among other things. The agricultural land was used for cultivation, livestock rearing or silage. Among the network of these lands, certain spaces were set aside for burials. Dwellings from the early Middle Ages were grouped into hamlets. The decline of the hamlet located near the site of Lallemand coincides with the development of the town of Mauguio, in the 10th century.
