Béziers covers 95.5 km², lies between 4 and 120 m above sea level and had 81,545 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Biterrois.
Béziers (in Occitan, Besièrs) is a French commune situated in the département de l'Hérault in the south of France in the région Occitanie, close to the Mediterranean Sea. It is the oldest town in France, predating Marseille. Multiple archaeological excavations undertaken since the 1980s have shown that, according to certain researchers, Béziers was founded by the Greeks in the 7th century BC.
A little history
Béziers is a very ancient town, with at least 2,600 years of history beginning with the establishment of an oppidum in the last quarter of the 7th century BC on an acropolis that had been frequented since very early times (Palaeolithic industries, occupations of the Chasséen period at Bosquet and at Crès, occupations of the final Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, occupations of the middle and late Bronze Age, as well as the first Iron Age).
