Palavas-les-Flots (pronounced [palavas lɛ flo], in Occitan Palavàs [pa.la.'βas]) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region, in the south-east of France. It is an urban and coastal commune with 6,133 inhabitants in 2023, having experienced a strong population increase since 1962. It is part of the urban unit of Palavas-les-Flots and belongs to the attraction area of Montpellier.
A little history
Originally, the site of Palavas was part of the Languedoc coastal strip, frequented intermittently by professional fishermen but often avoided in summer due to the presence of numerous mosquitoes on the ponds. In 533, a bishopric was established on the island of Maguelonne, whose territory extended as far as the site of Palavas. This bishopric appears, from that point on, in texts at the end of the 6th century, on an island already occupied in Antiquity. Originally, the bishopric of Maguelone and the county of Maguelone were based at Maguelone, but the town was ruined by the actions of Charles Martel in 737.
