Cognac is a commune in the south-west of France, a sub-prefecture of the département of Charente (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are known as the Cognaçais and the Cognaçaises. The second largest urban area in Charente after Angoulême, Cognac is also at the heart of the second largest catchment area of this département, where its influence extends into the neighbouring Charente-Maritime and encompasses 59,014 inhabitants in 2023.
A little history
The territory of the commune has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic, as attested by numerous scattered pieces of evidence. During the Neolithic period, several communities left their traces at Crouin, Saint-Martin and La Trache. The dolmen de Séchebec is situated in the heart of the town, in the Cité du Dolmen. The origins of the name Cognac are not entirely known.
