La Couronne is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is situated to the south of Angoulême, of whose agglomeration it forms part. Its inhabitants are called the Couronnais and the Couronnaises.
A little history
In the 12th century, a priest by the name of Lambert was appointed chaplain of the collegiate church of Saint-Jean-de-la-Palud, a poor village a few lieues from Angoulême and hemmed in by marshes. He chose to build a modest church on a mound of earth in the middle of these marshes, hence its name Coronella, with the help of a few disciples, in order to make it a monastery. This first church was begun in 1118 and completed in 1122, under the administration of the comte d'Angoulême Vulgrain II. In 1136, Lambert was promoted Bishop of Angoulême.
