Ruelle-sur-Touvre is a commune in the south-west of France, located in the département of Charente (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). It is situated to the east of Angoulême, of which it forms part of the urban area. Its inhabitants are known as the Ruellois and the Ruelloises.
A little history
In the Middle Ages, Ruelle was a parish bearing the name of a fief belonging to the seigneurie de la Tranchade (the Birot family). Fissac belonged to the Tison d'Argence family, and the duc de Montpensier withdrew there in 1568 after failing in his attempt to retake Angoulême from the Protestants. He was joined there by the future Henri III. The logis du Maine-Gagnaud, situated on the site of the current foundry, had welcomed François Ier during one of his visits to the sources of the Touvre, and he had a Renaissance-style fountain built there, which still bears his name and is displayed opposite the foundry.
